Cursor, Claude, Codex, DeepSeek, Hermes, or OpenClaw: Which AI Assistant Should Drive Your Video App?
Six MCP hosts compared for driving KwaFlux: setup, where config lives, how each asks for approval, timeout quirks, and who each one suits.
Key takeaways
- All six work with KwaFlux, because each can start a local MCP server. The difference is how you like to work: a chat window, an editor, a terminal, or a personal agent.
- Claude Desktop is the gentlest start for non-developers. Cursor and Claude Code fit people who already code. Codex suits terminal users. DeepSeek Harness suits people who already run DeepSeek models.
- Hermes Agent and OpenClaw suit people who want a personal agent that runs in the background, but only if it runs on the same computer as KwaFlux.
- Two quirks matter for video: Codex's 60-second default tool timeout, and Claude Desktop needing a full quit to load new servers.
Any AI assistant that can start a local MCP server can drive KwaFlux. KwaFlux's Settings generates the config for six of them: Codex, Claude (Code and Desktop), OpenClaw, DeepSeek Harness, Hermes Agent, and Cursor. Which one to use depends less on the video work and more on where you already spend your day.
In this guide, you'll learn what each host is, how KwaFlux connects to it, the differences that matter for long video jobs, and which one fits which kind of user.

What do these assistants have in common?
They're all MCP hosts: AI apps that can start an MCP server on your computer, read its tool list, and let the model call those tools. That's what KwaFlux needs. Each host starts KwaFlux's server, the server talks to the KwaFlux app, and the app runs the jobs on your GPU.
So the video side is the same everywhere: the same tools, the same rules, results written next to the source file. What changes is the host's interface, its config format, and how it handles approvals and timeouts. For what makes these "agents," see what is an AI agent.
The six at a glance
| Host | What it is | Where you talk to it |
|---|---|---|
| Cursor | An AI code editor with an agent | Cursor's chat panel |
| Claude Code | Anthropic's coding agent | Terminal or IDE |
| Claude Desktop | Anthropic's Claude chat app | Desktop chat window |
| Codex | OpenAI's coding agent | Terminal (CLI) or the Codex desktop app |
| DeepSeek Harness (DSH) | DeepSeek's agent harness, in Preview | CLI, web, or desktop app |
| Hermes Agent | Nous Research's open agent | Terminal (CLI) |
| OpenClaw | A personal agent with a gateway | Chat apps connected to its gateway |
Setup compared
| Host | How KwaFlux's card helps | Config file | Reload |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cursor | Install in Cursor button, or copy JSON | ~/.cursor/mcp.json | Toggle under Customize, or restart |
| Claude Code | Copy install command (claude mcp add --scope user) | ~/.claude.json | New session; check /mcp |
| Claude Desktop | Copy JSON | claude_desktop_config.json | Quit fully, reopen |
| Codex | Copy install command (codex mcp add), or copy TOML | ~/.codex/config.toml | Restart, or /mcp |
| DeepSeek Harness | Copy a YAML insert row | cordis.patch.yml (profile or home) | Hot reload on save |
| Hermes Agent | Copy install command (hermes mcp add), or copy YAML | ~/.hermes/config.yaml | /reload-mcp |
| OpenClaw | Copy install command (openclaw mcp set), or copy JSON | ~/.openclaw/openclaw.json | Reload MCP or restart the gateway |

Approvals compared
Video jobs write new files, so it's worth knowing how each host asks before running a tool:
| Host | Default | Finer control |
|---|---|---|
| Cursor | Asks before using MCP tools | Run Modes and tool allowlists |
| Claude Code | Asks; project .mcp.json servers also need approval | Permission rules using mcp__kwaflux__<tool> names |
| Claude Desktop | Asks before each tool | Allow a tool for the conversation |
| Codex | Per-server approval mode | auto, prompt, writes (asks only for tools not marked read-only), or approve; per-tool overrides |
| DeepSeek Harness | No MCP server runs until you add it | Server-level: you choose which rows to add |
| Hermes Agent | Depends on your Hermes setup | tools: include / exclude per server |
Whatever the host, KwaFlux adds its own limits: agent downloads are off until you choose Ask every time in KwaFlux, one switch turns all agent control off, and the assistant can only control the tasks it started.
Timeouts and long jobs
A conversion or an AI enhancement can take minutes. KwaFlux's wait tool waits up to 300 seconds per call, then the assistant can wait again. Hosts that cut a tool call off sooner need a setting changed:
| Host | What to change |
|---|---|
| Codex | tool_timeout_sec defaults to 60; set it to 330 |
| DeepSeek Harness | toolCallTimeoutMs, reported to default to 60 seconds; set 330000 |
| Claude Code | Add "timeout": 330000 to a .mcp.json entry if long waits fail |
| Hermes Agent | Raise the server's timeout if long waits fail |
A cut-off wait doesn't stop the job; it keeps running in KwaFlux's task list. More fixes are in the troubleshooting guide.
Which one fits you?
| If you… | Try | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Want to chat about your videos without opening a terminal | Claude Desktop | One config entry, a familiar chat window, approval for each tool |
| Already write code in Cursor | Cursor | One-button install from KwaFlux; the agent is already where you work |
| Live in a terminal or IDE with Anthropic's tools | Claude Code | One command; permission rules let read-only tools run quietly |
| Use OpenAI's tools | Codex | One command; the writes approval mode fits jobs that create files |
| Already run DeepSeek models through DSH | DeepSeek Harness | One YAML row; hot reload |
| Want a background personal agent you message from your phone | Hermes Agent or OpenClaw | Good at recurring chores, as long as the agent runs on the PC where KwaFlux is open |
A typical video use for each: Claude Desktop for "fix this clip and tell me when it's done"; Cursor or Claude Code for scripted batches alongside other files in a project; Codex for terminal batch runs, such as "convert every .mkv here"; a personal agent for scheduled chores like "every evening, export today's recordings for YouTube" with the Converter.
Final thoughts
Pick the assistant that matches how you already work. Claude Desktop is the gentlest start, Cursor and Claude Code suit people who code, Codex suits the terminal, DSH suits DeepSeek users, and Hermes or OpenClaw suit personal agents running on the same PC. The KwaFlux side stays the same: copy the config from Settings, keep the app open, and raise the tool timeout where a host needs it.
Bring your own assistant
KwaFlux includes a local MCP server and generates the setup for Cursor, Claude, Codex, DeepSeek Harness, Hermes, and OpenClaw. AI processing runs locally on your GPU — media files are not uploaded for processing. It runs on Windows 10 (64-bit, version 1809 or later), Windows 11, and macOS 12 or newer on Apple Silicon. Importing files and exploring the app need no account. Signing in with an active paid plan is required only to export, convert, repair a file, or download a file from a link.
Try It on Your Own Footage
Download KwaFlux and preview effects on your own footage for free before you pay — no account needed, and your media is processed on your GPU, not uploaded for processing. Video previews run 1, 3, or 5 seconds; stabilization previews run 5, 15, or 30 seconds.
Frequently asked questions
Which AI assistant works with MCP servers?
Many do, and there's no single best one. Any host that can start a local MCP server can use the same tools. Choose by how you work, whether that's a chat window, an editor, a terminal, or a personal agent, and check how it handles approvals and long tool calls.
Can I use more than one AI assistant with the same MCP server?
Yes. Each host starts its own copy of the server from its own config, and they can all talk to the same running app. Tasks from each show up in that app separately.
Do these assistants send my videos to the cloud?
Not to process them through a local MCP server; the app processes files on your computer. Your chat messages still go to the model provider, including any paths you type. See path and privacy rules.
Is Claude Desktop or Claude Code better for non-developers?
Claude Desktop is usually easier: you edit one config file once and then chat. Claude Code assumes you're comfortable in a terminal or IDE. See the Claude setup guide.
Can a cloud-hosted agent use a local MCP server?
No. A local stdio server is started by the host on the same computer. An agent running on a server elsewhere, or a cloud agent, can't start a program on your PC.
