Why old footage needs a different pipeline
Modern enhancement models are trained mostly on digital compression artifacts. Analog-era footage fails differently: interlacing, chroma bleed, tape dropouts, film grain, and fading. Running a generic enhancer on interlaced video, for example, often sharpens the comb artifacts instead of removing them. The right order matters — deinterlace first, then denoise, then reconstruct detail, then optionally colorize.
KwaFlux packages that ordering into one workflow, so a digitized VHS tape or 8mm film scan goes from import to a clean, progressive, optionally colorized master in a single tool.
What restoration honestly can and cannot do
Restoration recovers what is latent in the source — it cannot reconstruct frames that are physically destroyed or detail below the noise floor. Severely damaged sections will improve but keep some character of their age. For most home archives and broadcast-era material, the difference is nonetheless dramatic: stable, clean, watchable footage from sources people had written off.
If the file itself will not open, use KwaFlux file-repair modules first; the restoration passes below assume a playable source that looks degraded.
How to restore old footage with KwaFlux

Digitize and import
Capture the tape or film to a digital file with whatever hardware you have, then drop it into KwaFlux — imperfect capture quality is expected.

Enable deinterlacing for combed footage, film-grain denoise for analog noise, and detail reconstruction for softness. Preview 1s/3s/5s segments to tune each pass.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can AI colorize black-and-white video?
- Yes. The colorization model infers plausible colors per scene — skin, sky, foliage, and materials — rather than applying a single tint. Results look natural on most footage, though exact historical colors cannot be guaranteed.
What is deinterlacing and do I need it?
- Interlaced video stores alternating half-frames, which shows comb-teeth artifacts on modern displays. If your source came from a camcorder, VHS, or broadcast recording, you almost certainly want the deinterlacing pass first — KwaFlux offers two modes depending on source quality.
Will denoising remove real detail along with the grain?
- The film-grain model is trained to separate noise patterns from image structure, so texture like fabric and foliage survives. For very heavy grain you can preview both strength settings and choose the trade-off yourself.
Can KwaFlux fix a video file that won't play at all?
- That is a different problem — file corruption rather than image quality. KwaFlux includes separate file repair modules for video, image, and audio files that won't open; restoration described here applies to files that play but look degraded.
Do I need an NVIDIA GPU?
- No. KwaFlux runs on any DirectX 12 compatible discrete GPU — NVIDIA, AMD, and Intel Arc are all supported. NVIDIA RTX cards additionally use TensorRT acceleration.
