Not all noise is the enemy

Digital sensor noise, compression mosquito noise, and analog film grain fail differently. Aggressive denoise that erases grain can also erase skin texture. Start by naming the noise you actually have.

  • Low-light CMOS noise → denoise + optional night upscale
  • Heavy film grain → film-grain models, not photographic wipe
  • Streaming compression → reconstruct detail after mild denoise

Limits worth saying out loud

Should I denoise before or after upscaling?

Usually denoise first so the upscaler does not amplify noise into texture. Preview both orders on a short segment when the source is unusual.
